untitled (neon quotation), 2005
Usually reserved for commercial signage, this neon sign cites an empty gallery wall.
I was invited to produce site-specific versions of ‘untitled (neon quotation)’ for a group exhibition titled, On Being an Exhibition at Artists Space, NY in 2007, curated by Joseph del Pesco. One set (fabricated at a larger scale 18” x 18” each) was situated in the galleries third floor windows – seen only from the street putting the gallery space itself in quotations. A second set was situated behind the reception desk, acting like an empty logo.
“Quotation, then, is the ultimate weapon for making one believe. Because it plays upon what the other is assumed to believe, it is the means by which ‘reality’ is instituted.”
