LAUREL WOODCOCK

TRIBUTE wall lamp, 2004

While acknowledging the art historical conviction that the spectator completes the work, tribute fuses the aesthetic and utilitarian. 20 free-floating light boxes (12 1/2” x 12 1/2”) display images of the artists’ hand illuminating a variety of Bic lighters. Gallery visitors are heralded (rock star style) upon entering the space, the importance of their presence acknowledged.

To emphasize the use potential of the objects, a 30” x 40” poster with 4” x 5” reproductions and product code (O_R_ ruffle tucked synthetic, B_R_ jean jacket) is hung in the office area of the gallery.

An ambiguous interplay of supposed hierarchies is set into play, between the practice of art and functional disciplines such as architecture and design.
