LAUREL WOODCOCK

the stigma of words, 1994

A small stainless steel view hole is embedded in the rear wall of the gallery. Behind it a video plays continuously, a detailed image of skin with a tattoo in progress — a stylized line drawing of laurel leaves being inscribed on an indecipherable part of the body. The audio, which is heard separately form the video, is in both French and English. Phrases that emphasize the ability of language to have physical impact coupled with the indelible ink of the tattoo act as a metaphor for words and their intensity of touch.
