LAUREL WOODCOCK

MERCERSOUND, 2005

Mercer Union distributed MERCERSOUND, a compilation disk of 18 audio works by 15 artists as a free multiple at the 2005 Venice biennale. Spanning spoken word, sound poetry, soundscapes, noise, conceptual works, little ditties, found & homemade instruments, mash-ups, and bird calls, the disk features tracks by Dave Allen, Martin Creed, Kelly Mark, Jonathan Monk, Janet Morton, Daniel Olson, Yoko Ono, Michael Snow, Laurel Woodcock and others.

one minute apology samples from a timeworn vinyl record. A single lyric from Brenda Lee’s “I’m Sorry” (MCA Records — Golden Years) has been digitally edited only to emphasize its materiality. The scratches and skipping render the repeated apology insincere, and echoes the cliché of excessive self-reflection. Negotiating for a way to communicate honestly, while submerged in the complex demands of technology and socialized human relations
